Pneumomediastinum

  • Pneumomediastinum (gas within soft tissues of the mediastinum) may result from injury to the lungs or structures of the mediastinum such as the airways or oesophagus
  • The mediastinal pleura is separated from the mediastinum and becomes visible as a thin white line
  • This can be a very subtle finding and may be associated with other features of tracking gas such as surgical emphysema or pneumothorax
