  • The C2 (axis) lateral masses form a ring appearance when viewed on a lateral image
  • If this ring is incomplete then it may indicate a fracture

  • Violent hyperextension of the neck has resulted in an oblique fracture through the body of C2
  • The anterior fracture fragment resembles a 'teardrop'
